프란지스카 페너트 (Franziska Fennert) (b.1984)

1984년 독일에서 태어나 독일과 인도네시아 두 문화 속에서 자라난 작가 프란지스카 페너트는 두 문화간에 존재하는 유사점과 차이점에 대해 인식하며 작가의 옛 고향 독일과 새로운 삶의 둥지가 된 인도네시아 자바에서 얻은 경험을 소재로 한 작품활동을 선보인다. 작품의 주요 주재는 자본주의 발전의 영향에 관한 내용이며 주변에서 일어나는 이슈에 관한 작가만의 비판적인 관점을 제시한다. 프란지스카 페너트의 작품을 가만히 응시하다 보면 동화와 백일몽 그 사이 어딘가에 들어와 있는 기분이 든다. 작품 속 인물은 지긋이 눈을 감고 시간의 흐름에 귀를 기울이기를 즐긴다. 몇몇 이미지들은 머나먼 곳에서, 또 몇몇은 마음 속 깊은 영혼에서 끌어올리기도 한다. 이 모든 것들은 중국과 자바섬과 같은 동아시아 지역을 유유자적 여행하며 마음 속에 새긴 모습들로, 이 때 작가는 희망과도 같은 자바섬에서 삶의 닻을 내리고 정박하기로 했다. 페너트는 하늘과 땅, 부드러운 촉감과 경쾌한 선을 기반으로 만지면 물감이 묻어날 듯 한 풍부한 색채와 동화적인 표현으로 주제를 표현한다. 동양의 수묵 기법을 차용하면서도 표현 양식에서는 신 표현주의를 엿볼 수 있으며 작가 스스로 특정 장르에 국한되길 거부하듯, 그의 작품은 늘 자유로운 경계를 넘나들고 있다.

For several long seconds one feels as if in transit between the realm of fairy tales and that of daydreams. The personnel in her pictures love to listen to time with closed eyes. Franziska Fennert employs the knowledge of transformation and the foundations of a chosen homeland. Some pictorial signals come from far away, others are nourished from distant regions of the soul.

It is the Eastern world that she travels through on the paths of slowness and has absorbed into herself : China, Java, countries in transition. She has cast out her anchor off the islands of hope. The origins of her ideational richness are heaven and earth, what is soft, and the swinging line, out of which emerges a color - saturated universe of its own. Asian ink painting tradition and neo expressionism overlap. Franziska Fennert is right to refuse to let her liberal boundary - crossing be limited by a genre label.
